I-is-for-Iguanas: A Water Oasis

April 10, 2014 By Rikaine 5 Comments

Iguanas I-is-for-Iguanas: The water park not the lizard.  This past Sunday we spent the day at the pool.  The sun was shining and the water inviting!  Plus the food was amazing – I love fish!  It was a day well spent.

We searched for our suits, towels, and of course the sun screen. Packed everything up and jumped in the truck. Family time [Read more…]

H-is-for-Hamaca: A Must Have!

April 10, 2014 By Rikaine 4 Comments

Hamaca1H-is-for-Hamaca Style! Most people when they hear the word hammock they first think of the beach.  Sand at your feet, ocean in view, and maybe even a nice breeze – just the right setting to rock yourself to sleep.

Well in my living room I for sure don’t have the beach, unless maybe we are watching one on the T.V. but we do have a hamaca!  I can put my feet up and relax anytime I want (well, after all my work is done).

GuavaG-is-for-Guava: A power house fruit.  I had never heard of a guava before my move out of the USA.  However this smaller, round or oval shaped fruit is very common in Honduras.

When ripe the guava smells great, is sweat, and soft.  They range in [Read more…]

D-is-for Don & Doña: Tradition and Honor

April 4, 2014 By Rikaine 7 Comments

Don CelioD-is-for Don & Doña: What to call your in-laws? When I got married this is the exact question I asked my husband.  As I was entering a very different culture he kindly said, “If it were me I would use Don & Doña.”

Ever since forming our family I have wanted to respect my suegros by giving them a title in front of their first name as they do here.  Whenever I speak to my suegra I call her Doña Haydee.  For my suegro I mention him by Don Celio [Read more…]

Life is Like: An Avalanche of Snow – 3 Steps to “Unlayer” Your Life

February 22, 2014 By Rikaine Leave a Comment

Snowy Mountain Life is like an avalanche of snow piled at the end of your driveway after a plow comes by. Worse when your life is on the corner of two streets. That plow leaves the major bulk of snow right there and heads away (sometimes I even think they are laughing as they go).

Digging out starts mentally. When you [Read more…]

Shampoo: Supplies Shipped to Honduras

February 10, 2014 By Rikaine Leave a Comment

ship to honduras“What do you ship to Honduras?” I get that question all the time. Yes, I ship a lot of shampoo & toothpaste! You may be asking why? I get that question a lot too.

Since moving to Honduras I have had to be very careful with money (not that I wasn’t before the move). You see, many of the basics here are sometimes twice the cost or [Read more…]

It’s Been Awhile

July 7, 2012 By Rikaine Leave a Comment

Wow!

It really has been awhile since I have given an update about our family.  Life here in Honduras is never boring.  We are all doing well thank goodness.

My time has been limited since I have been giving English classes.  I am now giving less classes so I am going to dedicate my time to updating about life here.  I think it will be theraputic in some ways!  I for sure have been missing home.

So stay tuned to beans and tortillas.  There are lots of exciting stories to come your way!

Errands & Beauty

October 29, 2011 By Rikaine 2 Comments

San Pedro de Catacamas

This past Tuesday my husband and I went to run a few errands.  He helps rent out apartments and houses here in Honduras. One of his responsibilities is to collect the rent.  It’s not the same as in the USA. He must go and collect the rent money otherwise it’s never paid.  In the States you can just mail your personal check or money order and “voila” the rent or mortgage is taken care of.  Here going out to each renter is your best bet.  I don’t know of many people that use the post office in Honduras.  Sending your rent money will do no good – it will never arrive.  He goes and collects it because no one is going to come by and pay it.  So many people can’t afford to buy a car let alone pay the gas money, which is currently about $5.30 where we live. The trip to drop off the rent money is far for most by bicycle or walking.  Sometimes it’s frustrating for him to take his own time to do this, but he has learned that this is the best way to get his job done.  My husband asked me to go with this time.  It gets me out of the house a bit and I learn where more places are.  I meet new people along the way, and he and I can chat during the car ride about the day or how the kids are doing.  It’s kind of a way to just check in with each other.

As my husband was collecting the rent at a particular house I decided to wait in the car.  It was cool this evening.  I think about 60 F.  I looked out and thought, “This is the life.  This is why I love it here”.  Not only was it cool but there was a breeze.  As I looked out I saw houses to my right and mountains to my left. Kids were out playing soccer and having fun.  Adults were out doing their errands by walking or riding bikes. Yet others were sitting on their porches enjoying the same evening I was. One thought kept coming back to me – the mountains are such a beautiful & powerful sight; I feel so lucky to get to enjoy them.  I see beauty in the mountains, families taking time for each other, and a stroll among the neighborhood, etc.  I think not everyone stops to take time and enjoy such things. I know I didn’t do it enough before.  Since moving I have had the time to enjoy where I live. I get to take a break and just “breath”.  I know the fast pace of the U.S. can really take the life out of a person.  Since the move I have been able to enjoy my surroundings and my family.  I was so glad to take the time to run errands with my husband this particular Tuesday evening.  While we got things done I was able to also marvel over where it is my family and I live.
